Eswatini: Protest possible in Manzini Feb. 23

Student activists may protest in Manzini, Eswatini, Feb. 23; heightened security measures and clashes possible.

Informational

Event

Student activists associated with the Swaziland Student Command and the Swaziland National Union of Students may protest in Manzini Feb. 23, coinciding with the ongoing trial of activist Colani Maseko. The trial resumed early Feb. 23 at the Manzini Magistrate Court. The groups planned a protest supporting Maseko on Feb. 9 during his last court appearance.

Police are likely to maintain a heightened security presence at the court and its environs Feb. 23. Short-term significant but highly localized disruptions are likely near all gatherings. Any street protests that form have the potential to be highly disruptive. Widespread violence is unlikely, but cannot be discounted entirely as previous politically motivated demonstrations have degenerated into clashes.

Advice

Avoid protests due to possible violence. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately and take shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Follow all security personnel instructions. Monitor local news for updates on protests and road conditions, as party leaders may not announce actions in advance. Allow additional travel time near gatherings.
