Volcanic ash from the Nevado del Ruiz Volcano, located approximately 129 km (80 miles) west of Bogota, has been reported in the city of Manizales in Caldas Department March 17. The volcano recently produced an ash plume 7,000 meters (23,000 feet) high following an eruptive event early March 17. Volcanic material was sent in a northwesterly direction from the crater, resulting in ashfall in nearby communities. La Nubia Airport (MZL) in Manizales has suspended operations due to the ashfall.
The volcano is in a continually eruptive state, and the recent volcanic activity does not appear to indicate a particular increase in volcanic activity. The Colombian Geological Survey maintains a yellow level warning (the second-highest on a four-tier scale) for Nevado del Ruiz. Additional eruptions could cause low-level seismic activity, ash clouds, and landslides in the surrounding area.
