Sri Lanka: Emergency water disruptions occurring in parts of Colombo through late March 19

Emergency water outages affecting parts of Colombo, Sri Lanka, through late March 19. Commercial disruptions possible.

Informational

Event

The National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB) stated that an emergency water supply outage is affecting parts of Colombo through late March 19 due to a pipeline issue. Localities affected by the disruptions, which began late March 18, include Zones 5 and 6 and the Battaramulla, Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia, Himbutana, Pelawatta, Ratmalana, and Udumulla areas. Additionally, Zone 4 is experiencing low water supply pressure.

While residents have relied on private water suppliers during previous water shortages, such services may be affected due to COVID-19 measures. Some business disruptions are possible, especially for companies that rely on large quantities of municipal water to maintain operations. Prolonged water supply disruptions are possible, particularly if the recovery works take longer than expected.

Advice

Confirm alternative water supplies for business operations. Pressure and water quality may be poor after service resumes; run taps for several minutes before using water. Use only bottled water from reputable suppliers for drinking and hygienic purposes.
