Officials are maintaining the warning level for Sao Jorge Volcano on San Jorge Island, Azores Region at Level 4 of 5, as of March 29, following increased activity at the volcano. More than 20,000 small earthquakes have been detected since March 20, mainly occurring in Velas Municipality. An eruption is not imminent but is increasingly likely.
More than 1,500 people on San Jorge Island have voluntarily evacuated as of March 29. Authorities have activated the Regional Emergency Plan and are preparing to evacuate around 5,000 people from the municipality of Velas in case of an eruption. Authorities have advised against all but essential travel to San Jorge Island. Residents are also advised to avoid the areas of flat terrain (Fajas) at the foot of the cliffs overlooking the sea in Velas Municipality.
An eruption could cause localized transport disruptions; flight delays are possible at Sao Jorge Airport (SJZ) if an eruption creates a significant ash plume. Ground transport disruptions could also occur. Authorities could suspend or delay rail service. Falling ash could cause slick driving conditions on nearby roads and reduced visibility, leading to localized traffic disruptions.

Drive cautiously, as roads may be slippery from volcanic ash. If operating in areas affected by an ash cloud, consider remaining indoors when possible. Do not rub irritated eyes; flush them with water. Seek medical attention if you have trouble breathing.
