Winter weather causes power outages in Podlaskie, Poland, April 2. Electricity and ground transportation disruptions likely.

Informational

Event

At least 35,000 customers are without power in Podlaski Voivodeship as of 06:00 April 2 following heavy snow. According to PGE Dystrybucja SA, wet snow caused tree branches to fall onto power lines, causing faults and cable breaks. Technicians are deploying to locate faults and repair power lines; however, the recent snowfall and icy conditions are creating adverse driving conditions. Further rain and snow is forecast over the coming hours. Rain falling in sub-zero temperatures is likely to result in ice build-up and icy surfaces, causing locally icy surfaces and slippery driving conditions.

Hazardous Conditions
Snow and ice accumulations are possible across the affected area. Lesser accumulations are possible where sleet and freezing rain mix with the snow and the precipitation are less intense. In addition to the heavy snow, strong wind gusts will likely lead to periods of blowing and drifting snow. Blizzard conditions and sporadic power outages are possible throughout the affected area.

Transport
Traffic and commercial trucking delays are probable along regional highways. Dangerous and challenging driving conditions are also likely on secondary and rural roads as maintenance crews prioritize clearing major routes.

Advice

Monitor local media for updated weather information. Verify road conditions before driving in areas where heavy snowfall is forecast. Allow extra time to reach destinations in these areas and carry an emergency kit and warm clothes if driving is necessary, especially on secondary or rural routes that could become impassable. Plan accordingly for delivery delays if routing shipments by truck through the affected area. Confirm flights. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged electricity outages.
