Warning

Event

Anti-government protests over the ongoing economic crisis in Sri Lanka continue in Colombo as of April 9. Daily day-long protests outside the parliament building, and at Independence Square will continue indefinitely. Hundreds to a few thousand people may attend larger demonstrations. Planned events for April 9, mainly by student groups, include:

  • 08:30: Activists will gather outside the Fort railway station

  • 09:00: Rallies will occur at Galle Face in Colombo, as well as the Ananda Samarakoon theater in Colombo's suburb of Nugegoda.

Additional unannounced gatherings are likely, especially near government buildings, and residences of politicians. Student protests are likely to be well-attended and cause significant localized disruptions.

Enhanced security measures are in place across Colombo. Security personnel typically monitor any demonstrations, as well as erect roadblocks and security cordons near sensitive sites. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely, especially during large gatherings and protest marches. Police have used tear gas and water cannons to forcibly disperse previous demonstrations. Protests may quickly turn violent, with activists engaging in arson, vandalism, and attacks on vehicles or property. Clashes between police and protesters are possible. Officials may impose controls on public movement and telecommunication services in case of significant violence.

Advice

Avoid protests due to possible clashes. Plan for localized transport and business disruptions near gathering sites. Seek alternative routes to circumvent rallies. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately and seek shelter at a safe non-government building. Follow all security and traffic advisories.
