Sri Lanka: Curfew imposed in Rambukkana after police clash with demonstrators amid fuel-related protests across country April 19 /update 1

Police impose curfew in Rambukkana, Sri Lanka, after clashes leave one dead, 12 wounded April 19; protests reported in areas across country.

Warning

Event

Authorities have imposed a curfew in Rambukkana until further notice after clashes between police and demonstrators left one protester dead and some 12 others wounded April 19. Several police officers were also injured in the violence. The demonstrators had reportedly blocked the tracks on a key rail line for hours and burned tires to demand fuel amid prevailing shortages and rising prices. The incident marks the first time that security forces have used live ammunition to forcibly disperse protesters since the demonstrations denouncing the government's perceived mismanagement of the economy began in March.

Protests related to a recent hike in fuel prices also took place in multiple other cities across Sri Lanka April 19, particularly in Chilaw, Galle, Gampaha, Kandy, Matara, and Ratnapura. Protesters have blocked several roadways, including those leading to Galle and the Colombo-Badulla highway in Haputale. Private bus drivers have suspended services in several areas, with some drivers parking their buses so as to obstruct traffic. Some shops have closed in affected cities.

Additional protests are almost certain to materialize in cities across Sri Lanka over the short term. Officials will likely monitor protests and may forcibly disperse gatherings that become especially disruptive. Further clashes between protesters and police remain possible. Localized traffic and business disruptions, as well as disruptions to bus and rail services, will likely continue in areas experiencing protest activity.

Advice

Avoid all protests due to the threat of further violence. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately. Allow additional travel time near large gatherings. Confirm transport schedules and business appointments in advance. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities, including curfew orders.
