Military units conducting search operations in Antioquia, Colombia, April 20, following bomb attack at Frontino.
Event
Colombian military units are engaged in search operations in western Antioquia Department as of April 20 following an overnight bomb attack that targeted troops in Frontino. The attack killed six soldiers and injured at least five others; conflicting reports indicate between one and three soldiers remain missing. Frontino is a rural municipality, located approximately 80 km (50 miles) northwest of Medellin.
Although no organization has as yet claimed responsibility for the incident, authorities believe the armed group Autodefensas Gaitanistas de Colombia (AGC), also known as Gulf Clan (Clan del Golfo), staged the attack following a raid by the military in which one of the AGD's members was killed. Authorities also believe the AGC had collaboration from dissident members of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC).
Very tight security is likely in western Antioquia as government forces attempt to locate the missing soldiers and apprehend the attackers. Armed clashes could occur if Colombian troops come in contact with AGC elements.
Advice
Exercise extreme caution if operating in western Antioquia department. Strictly heed instructions of authorities.
