Sri Lanka: Additional anti-government protests to occur at various locations in Colombo as of April 21 /update 9
Protests continue across Colombo, Sri Lanka, as of April 20. Tight security, localized transport disruptions likely. Clashes possible.
Event
Daily anti-government protests are continuing in Colombo as of April 21 over the economic crisis in Sri Lanka. Demonstrations are occurring at Galle Face Green and Independence Square indefinitely. Protests are also likely near the Parliament House, as a parliamentary session is scheduled April 19-22. Hundreds to a few thousand people may attend larger gatherings. Planned events for April 21 include:
08:30: Remembrance prayers for the third anniversary of the 2019 Easter attacks to occur at St. Anthony's Church in Kochchikade. Activists have regularly protested since 2019 to demand expedited investigations of the attack and potential security lapses. Additional peaceful memorial events are likely nationwide, mainly at churches and public squares.
13:00: Unionized engineers have called for a protest march from the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL) building to Galle Face Green. Dozens of participants may join the event, likely prompting disruptions along and near Green Path, Horton Place, as well as the A4 highway.
17:30: Demonstrations to occur at St. Theresa's Church in Thimbirigasyaya and Bernard's Business Park in Kohuwala.
18:30: Protest planned at the Jubilee Post Roundabout intersection in Mirihana. Participants may march towards President Gotabaya Rajapaksa's private residence along the Pangiriwatta Mawatha, located approximately 0.9 km (0.6 miles) from the rally venue. Clashes may occur, mainly if activists breach security cordons and/or police attempt to forcibly disperse the gathering.s
Additional unannounced gatherings are likely, especially near government buildings and residences of politicians. Further counterdemonstrations by government supporters are also possible.
Enhanced security measures are in place across Colombo. Security personnel typically monitor demonstrations and erect roadblocks and security cordons near sensitive sites. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely, especially during large gatherings and marches. Protestors may clash with police or rival groups demonstrating in proximity. Security forces have used tear gas and water cannons to disperse previous demonstrations. Protests may quickly turn violent, with activists engaging in arson, vandalism, and attacks on vehicles or property. Officials may impose controls on public movement and telecommunication services in case of significant violence.
Advice
Avoid protests due to possible clashes. Plan for localized transport and business disruptions near gathering sites. Seek alternative routes to circumvent rallies. If violence breaks out, leave the area immediately and seek shelter at a safe non-government building. Follow all security and traffic advisories.
