Informational

Event

The opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) party is holding a protest march from Kandy towards central Colombo from 09:00 April 26. Thousands of activists are scheduled to reach Campbell Park in Colombo for a rally May 1. The march route is:

  • April 26: Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic to Kandy Central Market then Mawanella in Kegalle District

  • April 27: Mawanella to Galigamuwa, Kegalle District

  • April 28: Galigamuwa to Danowita, Gampaha District

  • April 29: Danowita to Yakkala, Gampaha District

  • April 30: Yakkala to Peliyagoda, Gampaha District

  • May 1: Peliyagoda to Campbell Park, Colombo

Localized transport disruptions are likely, especially along the march route and at the protest venue. Increased congestion, diversions, and roadblocks by protesters and/or police are likely to affect the A-1 highway and roads in Colombo's Maradana area.

Enhanced security measures are in place across Colombo. Security personnel typically monitor demonstrations and erect roadblocks and security cordons near sensitive sites. Protestors may clash with police or rival groups demonstrating in proximity. Security forces have used tear gas and water cannons to disperse previous demonstrations. Protests may quickly turn violent, with activists engaging in arson, vandalism, and attacks on vehicles or property. Significant violence may result in business disruptions, as well as controls on public movement and telecommunication services.

Advice

Avoid the march route and rally site due to possible clashes. Plan for localized transport and business disruptions in the affected area through May 1. Do not navigate roadblocks due to the threat of violence. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately and seek shelter at a safe non-government building. Confirm business appointments, road status, and transport reservations in Colombo April 30-May 1; monitor trusted local media for updates on protest details as organizers may change plans at short notice. Follow all security and traffic advisories.
