Warning

Event

Numerous rallies and large gatherings will likely take place in cities across Colombia April 28 to mark the first anniversary of the Paro Nacional of 2021, a series of protests against higher taxes, corruption, and healthcare reform that ultimately turned violent resulting in dozens of deaths.

In Bogota, protests will take place at Parque El Portico beginning at 08:00 and in front of the federal attorney general's office (Fiscalia General de la Nacion) starting at 10:00. Additionally, student groups will assemble outside the National University of Colombia from 11:00 and the Francisco Jose de Caldas University from 14:00. In Cali, activists will demonstrate near Puerto Rellena, Siloe, and Mariano Ramos; however, organizers have as yet released no details concerning specific times or locations for the events in the city. Gatherings are also likely in several other cities, including Medellin, Cartagena, and Barranquilla.

Authorities plan to deploy tight security in most cities, particularly around public squares, landmarks, and other prominent locations between April 26-May 2. Travel and business disruptions are possible due to road closures, traffic congestion, and crowded public transportation. Clashes between protesters and security personnel cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations as a standard precaution; keep away from locations where security forces appear to be deploying. Heed the advice of local authorities.
