Germany: Authorities extend COVID-19-related international travel restrictions until at least May 31 /update 77

Event

Authorities in Germany have extended the country's COVID-19-related international travel restrictions until at least May 31; the measures were previously slated to expire April 28.

Domestic Measures
While most federal-level restrictions have been rescinded, all individuals, regardless of vaccination status, are still required to adhere to some basic protective measures, including wearing a facemask and maintaining social distancing. Wearing a facemask is required in some indoor public spaces, including retail stores, public transport, and healthcare facilities. German states and private companies may require adherence to stricter measures than those enforced at the federal level.

Those who test positive for COVID-19 using a Point of Care (PoC) antigen test are required to take a PCR test immediately and enter self-isolation. Close contacts of individuals testing positive are also required to enter self-isolation, though fully vaccinated persons may be exempt. Individuals must remain in isolation until receipt of a negative PCR test result or for 14 days, whichever comes first; alternatively, individuals may exit quarantine upon clearance from their local health office.

International Travel Restrictions
Travelers ages 12 and older arriving in Germany must provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19, proof of recovery, or a negative result from either a PCR test taken no more than 48 hours before departure or a rapid antigen test or other test taken no more than 48 hours before arrival; truck drivers and other transport workers are generally exempt from these requirements.

Germany prohibits the entry of unvaccinated individuals from outside the EU, except for those from Hong Kong, Indonesia, Macau, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan. Fully vaccinated travelers from other countries can enter Germany for nonessential purposes, provided they have received their final dose of COVID-19 vaccine at least 14 days before travel. As of April 27, no countries are classified as high-risk or virus-variant areas.
