Iran: Protests and associated clashes since May 6 reported in Khuzestan Province
Protests and associated clashes since May 6 reported in Susangerd and Izeh, Khuzestan Province, Iran. Avoid all protests.
Event
Incoming reports indicate that anti-government protests are occurring in several urban centers in Khuzestan Province as of May 7. Although details continue to emerge, anti-government protests reportedly began May 6 and were sparked by a sharp increase in bread prices in recent days. Police officers reportedly employed tear gas and other crowd control measures to disperse protesters.
Susangerd: Unconfirmed reports that a curfew is in place after security forces used live ammunition to disperse protesters in the Abuzar area of the city May 6.
Izeh: Protests occurred May 6, with protesters reportedly storming a flour depot.
Authorities appear to have either cut or significantly slowed mobile internet services in Khuzestan in response to the unrest.
Additional protests are likely in the coming days in Khuzestan and could spread to other areas of the country, given that the bread price hike is a nationwide issue and comes amid high levels of inflation and generally poor economic conditions. Any protests that do occur could take place outside government buildings, public squares, and other prominent demonstration sites. Hundreds to thousands of individuals could attend the demonstrations.
Increased security and localized transport disruptions are almost certain near gathering sites. Further clashes between protesters and security forces are likely if additional protests materialize; security personnel in Iran are known to move swiftly and decisively to quell dissent, especially if it is anti-government in nature.
Advice
Avoid all protests as a standard security precaution. Exercise caution near known or likely protest locations. Plan for increased security and localized transport disruptions near demonstrations; confirm the availability of transport and allow additional time to reach destinations. Follow all instructions issued by local authorities.
