Lingering transport and business disruptions are likely in North Rhine-Westphalia through at least early May 21 after a bout of severe weather hit parts of the state May 20. Notably, a suspected tornado injured some 40 people in Paderborn, and adverse weather caused extensive damage in nearby Lippstadt. Emergency responders have reportedly deployed to the most acutely affected areas. Authorities in Paderborn have advised individuals in the area to remain at home so as to stay safe and avoid hindering recovery efforts.

Rail service disruptions have been reported in North Rhine-Westphalia in connection with the severe weather. While weather conditions are forecast to improve May 21, trains in the state may nonetheless continue to experience weather-related disruptions over the coming hours.
