Context

Tensions have escalated considerably in southwestern Cameroon since October 2017, when secessionists unilaterally proclaimed the independence of the so-called state of Ambazonia, which is unrecognized internationally. Ambazonia geographically includes the English-speaking Northwest and Southwest regions of Cameroon. The threat of violence and politically motivated kidnappings remain high as various armed groups continue to call for secession.
