Belgium: Climate activists to demonstrate in Brussels from 10:00 June 19

Climate activists to demonstrate in Brussels, Belgium, from 10:00 June 19; increased security, localized disruptions likely.

Informational

Event

The environmental activist group Extinction Rebellion (XR) plans to demonstrate outside the European Parliament in Brussels on June 19. The purpose of the action is to demand that European governments take greater action to reduce activities that are harmful to the environment. Participants will gather at Place du Luxembourg from 10:00; attendance could reach the thousands.

Additional police will deploy to monitor and facilitate the action. Large crowds and associated security measures, including possible road closures and movement restrictions, will likely prompt localized disruptions; public transport services may be canceled or diverted. The action is likely to pass off peacefully as XR advocates for non-violent civil disobedience. However, security services could attempt to forcibly disperse demonstrators if they attempt to block traffic or engage in other deliberately disruptive actions.

Advice

Avoid the demonstration as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Heed instructions from security services and leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Check for disruptions and allow extra time for travel in the affected area June 19.
