Authorities maintaining warnings for coastal flooding in southern Fiji through June 18. Further inundations are possible at high tides.

Authorities are maintaining warnings for coastal flooding across many southern coastal areas of Fiji through at least June 18. The elevated flood threat is due to a combination of heavy swells generated by a high-pressure system to the far southwest of Fiji and the highest tide of the month, known as the King Tide. Coastal inundations have caused some minor damage and disruptions across some southern coastal areas in recent days, including in parts of Labeka Island in the Lau Islands and along the Coral Coast between Sigatoka and Suva on Viti Levu Island.
As of June 17, the Fiji Meteorological Service is maintaining a coastal inundation warning for coastal parts of southern Viti Levu, from Natadola through to the Coral Coast to Pacific Harbour, as well as for southern coastal areas of Mamanuca, Moala, southern Lomaiviti, and southern and central Lae island groups and Beqa, Kadavu, and Vatulele islands. There is a low-to-moderate chance of coastal inundations in these areas during high tides. Officials could update and possibly extend the coverage of weather alerts over the coming days.
Hazardous Conditions
Heavy swells could contribute to further coastal flooding during high tides over the coming days. Urban flooding is also possible in developed areas near the coast with easily overwhelmed stormwater drainage systems.
Authorities could issue mandatory evacuation orders for flood-prone communities over the coming days. Disruptions to electricity and telecommunications services are possible where significant flooding impacts utility networks.
Transport
Floodwaters and debris flows may render some bridges or roadways impassable, impacting overland travel in and around affected areas. Ponding on road surfaces could cause hazardous driving conditions on coastal roads. Authorities could temporarily close some low-lying routes that become inundated by floodwaters.
Localized business disruptions may occur in affected coastal areas; some businesses might not operate at full capacity because of flood damage to facilities, possible evacuations, and some employees' inability to reach work sites.
Advice
Monitor local media for weather updates and related advisories. Confirm all transport reservations and business appointments before travel. Make allowances for localized travel delays and potential supply chain disruptions where flooding has been forecast. Do not drive on flooded roads. Charge battery-powered devices in the case of prolonged electricity outages.
