Israel: Air defense system intercepts rocket fired from Gaza Strip toward south of country early July 16

Israeli aerial defense array intercepts rocket fired from Gaza Strip toward south of country early July 16; further strikes possible.

Warning

Event

Sirens sounded in southern Israel, including in the Ashkelon area, early July 16 as Gaza-based militants fired two rockets toward the country. Israel's aerial defense array intercepted one projectile; the other rocket reportedly fell in an open area. No casualties or damage were immediately reported.

Israeli forces will almost certainly launch retaliatory airstrikes on targets in the Gaza Strip over the coming hours. Heightened security measures are likely in Israel's Southern District through at least early July 16. Gaza-based militants may fire additional rockets at communities in southern Israel over the short term. Precautionary measures, such as evacuations, are possible in the affected areas.

Advice

Monitor local media and adhere to all instructions issued by local officials. If incoming mortar rounds or rockets are reported or warning sirens sound in the general vicinity, report to the nearest bomb shelter and await further instructions from authorities. If there is no shelter nearby, stay indoors and away from windows and exterior walls. If possible, move to a ground floor or basement.
