Sudan: Activists call for nationwide protests to denounce communal violence July 24

Activists have called for demonstrations in Khartoum and several other cities July 24. The purpose of the action is to denounce the violence between Hausa and Bartis communities over land issues in Blue Nile State in mid-July. While the precise times and locations for the protests have not been announced, gatherings are likely on major thoroughfares and near government buildings, including the Presidential Palace in Khartoum. Protests in other major cities, including Omdurman, Port Sudan, Kassala, and El-Damazine, are also likely.
During protest periods, security forces will almost certainly heighten security along key thoroughfares and near government buildings. Bridges, particularly those in the Khartoum area, may be closed to prevent protesters from gathering. Protesters may erect roadblocks and clash with the security forces. Unrest and work stoppages could also disrupt business operations. Public transport will also probably be impacted.
Context
The recent communal clashes reportedly left dozens of people dead and several others wounded. Authorities have imposed security measures to bring stability to the region; a nightly curfew and gathering ban are also in effect in the towns of Roseires and Damazin, Blue Nile State as of July 21.
Creeping desertification brought on by climate change continues to drive intense competition for access to scarce resources such as grazing areas and drinking water. Given the easy availability of small arms, such tensions regularly escalate into clashes, which may in turn fuel rounds of reprisal attacks between various communities, sometimes leading to heavy casualty tolls.

As a precaution, avoid all demonstrations that may materialize, as well as potential rally sites and locations where security forces appear to be assembling. Use alternative routes to avoid demonstration venues; allow additional time to reach destinations. If violence occurs, leave the area immediately and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building.
