Heightened security, disruptions likely over coming days in Tripoli, Libya, following clashes overnight July 21-22.
Event
Heightened security and localized transportation disruptions are likely over the coming days following reports of clashes between rival armed groups overnight July 21-22 in Tripoli. Clashes occurred in several areas, including the Saba’a and Ain Zara districts, Al-Furnaj and Ain Zara areas, and Al-Shok road. The clashes left at least 10 people dead and several others wounded.
In addition, officials diverted flights from Mitiga International Airport (MJI) to Misrata International Airport (MRA) the morning of July 22 due to the clashes. MJI reportedly remains open, but it is unknown when it will resume receiving flights.
Heightened security measures, including additional checkpoints along major routes, are likely to persist in the coming days. Should further militia actions be taken, confrontations between opposing groups remain possible. Disruptions to state operations are possible in response to the militia deployments.
Advice
Avoid clashes as a routine precaution. Plan for related ground travel delays. Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation. Confirm flights to and from MJI.
