Myanmar: US Embassy issues security message July 27 warning of escalated risk of violence and collateral damage, especially Yangon
US Embassy issues security alert July 27 warning of increased risk of violence and collateral damage in Myanmar, particularly Yangon.
Event
US Embassy officials in Myanmar published a security alert July 27 warning of a heightened risk of violence and collateral damage across the country, particularly in Yangon, amid pro-democracy activists' calls for an escalation of attacks against the military (Tatmadaw) government. The notice advises US citizens to avoid security forces and warns of possible attacks, including attempted assassinations and explosions, targeting security personnel and supporters of the Tatmadaw regime. The embassy alert also warns of the possible violent responses from security forces to any attacks or demonstrations by pro-democracy activists and potential lockdowns and communication outages.
Context
There has been heightened tension in Myanmar after the regime announced July 25 that it had executed four high-profile pro-democracy activists for alleged terror-related acts. The report came amid anti-regime groups' continued protests and clashes with the Tatmadaw and its related forces since the February 2021 military coup, when the Tatmadaw ousted the democratically elected government led by then-State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD) party. The anti-regime groups include the National Unity Government's (NUG) People’s Defense Force (PDF) and various ethnic armed organizations.
Advice
Continue to exercise extreme caution in Myanmar, especially Yangon. Heed all official security instructions. Register and maintain contact with your diplomatic mission. Purchase essential items and ensure several days' supply when possible. Collect essential items - including identification and any important legal and travel documents - in a "go-bag" that can be easily accessed. Monitor local developments closely. If a demonstration, fighting, or explosion occurs nearby, immediately leave the area, seek shelter at a safe, nongovernmental building, and stay away from windows.
