Officials heightening security in areas of Dakshina Kannada District, India, through Aug. 6. Gathering restrictions imposed.

Warning

Event

Authorities are tightening security in Dakshina Kannada District, Karnataka, through at least Aug. 6. Officials have imposed Section 144 orders, which prohibit gatherings of four or more people, and require shops to close at 18:00. The government has also banned the sale of liquor. Authorities had implemented gathering and business restrictions in Bajpe, Mulki, Panambur, and Surathkal before expanding the measures across the district due to tensions following multiple murders in late July.

Authorities may extend the measures if the situation remains tense or escalates. Groups may hold protests denouncing the violence. Security forces will likely monitor protests and may try to disperse especially disruptive gatherings. Clashes between protesters and police are possible. Protesters may march along or block roadways, causing localized transport disruptions.

Advice

Avoid protests due to possible violence. If clashes break out, leave the area immediately. Follow all security personnel instructions. Allow additional travel time near gatherings. Do not attempt to cross roadblocks, as protesters may react violently.
