Guatemala: Protesters block the CA-2 Highway in Retalhuleu Aug. 25

Protesting local residents are blocking parts of the CA-2 Highway in Retalhuleu Aug. 25. Participants have blocked the Castillo Armas Bridge which is located between Santa Cruz Mulua and San Sebastian at kilometer marker 178 of the CA-2 Highway. The purpose of the gathering is to protest the relocation of residents from some local townships to accommodate the planned resumption of train services on a previously inactive rail line.

Transport disruptions may continue along parts of the CA-2 Highway for several hours. Authorities will likely deploy increased security to monitor the event; clashes between protesters and police are possible.
