Informational

Event

Labor organizations, opposition political parties, and pro-democracy activist groups plan to stage anti-war rallies and other similar events in various cities across Turkey Sept. 1 to mark International Peace Day. A rally slated to take place in Istanbul's Kadikoy district will probably be the largest of the gatherings; participants will assemble at Kadikoy Ferry Wharf Square starting at 19:30.

Organizers have also announced the following events in other Turkish cities:

  • Adana: Rally at Ataturk Park in Seyhan district starting at 17:00

  • Ankara: Various events at Anitpark in Cankaya district

  • Batman: Rally at Ataturk Park at 17:00

  • Bursa: Gathering at Fomara Square at 19:00

  • Diyarbakir: Rally at Dagkapi Square

  • Eskisehir: March from the Edi-Koop market to the National Monument (Ulus Aniti) starting at 18:30

  • Izmir: Gathering at Republic Square in the Konak neighborhood starting at 19:00.

Related gatherings and marches will also take place elsewhere across the country, including Adiyaman, Gaziantep, Malatya, Mersin, and Sanliurfa provinces. Event size will probably vary significantly by location. While most of the rallies will likely remain largely peaceful, isolated clashes or other security disturbances cannot be ruled out. Turkish police have a history of using force to disperse demonstrations they deem to be overly disruptive. Localized traffic disruptions are likely near any rally venues.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations as a precaution. Plan alternative driving routes and allow extra time to reach destinations near potential or announce rally locations. Heed the instructions of security personnel; leave the area immediately at the first sign of any security disturbance.
