Brazil: Events planned nationwide on Independence Day Sept. 7; heightened security likely
Events and demonstrations planned across Brazil Sept. 7 on 200th anniversary of country's independence. Heightened security likely.
Event
Events are planned across Brazil to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the country's independence Sept. 7. President Jair Bolsonaro has also called for nationwide demonstrations in support of his government and plans to attend rallies in Brasilia and Rio de Janeiro. Thousands of people will likely march along Esplanada dos Ministerios from the morning through the afternoon in the capital. In Rio de Janeiro, the city's Independence Day military parade is planned to take place in the Copacabana and Barra da Tijuca areas in the south of the city 08:00-16:00; the president will likely join supporters in Rio de Janeiro at 15:00 after participating in events in Brasilia.
Further rallies, events, and demonstrations in favor of and against the government are likely in most cities across the country Sept. 7. Additionally, large Independence Day celebrations will likely take place along Sao Paulo's Avenida Paulista. The number of attendees at events across the nation will likely vary significantly according to location; many events in Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia, Sao Paulo, Belo Horizonte, and most other state capitals will probably attract thousands. While most groups that typically organize anti-government protests have not called for major demonstrations Sept. 7, they are still possible.
Increased security is likely nationwide. Authorities will almost certainly heighten security measures in Brasilia and Rio de Janeiro due to the presence of the president. Transport disruptions are likely in the vicinity of Independence Day events due to checkpoints, road closures, and other security precautions. Clashes between opposing groups are possible; protesters may also clash with the police if authorities attempt to forcibly disperse crowds. The possibility of politically motivated attacks cannot be ruled out.
Advice
Avoid all major gatherings as a standard security precaution. If violence breaks out, immediately leave the area and seek shelter in a safe, nongovernmental building. Allow extra time for travel near Independence Day celebration sites and in downtown areas of major cities.
