Moldova: Further anti-government protests likely in Chisinau through mid-September

Additional anti-government protests are likely in Chisinau, Moldova, through mid-September. Increased security, disruptions likely.

Informational

Event

Additional protests are likely in Chisinau through mid-September following anti-government demonstrations on Sept. 9, when thousands of people gathered to demand the resignation of President Maia Sandu and the government and call for early elections amid inflation and perceived missteps in gas negotiations with Russia. Members and supporters of the SOR party gathered outside the Presidential Administration before proceeding to the Presidential Palace, both located on Stefan cel Mare si Sfant Boulevard. A major protest is planned on Sept. 18; smaller gatherings are likely in central areas through that date. Precise gathering locations and times of the Sept. 18 action have not been announced.

Additional police will deploy to monitor any demonstrations that occur. Gatherings are likely in public squares and near government buildings in the city center, including the aforementioned locations and Parliament. Protests and related security measures, including possible road closures and movement restrictions, will likely prompt localized transport disruptions in the area. Demonstrations are likely to proceed peacefully, though isolated clashes between police and protesters cannot be ruled out, particularly if activists attempt to breach any security cordons.

Advice

Avoid any protests as a routine security precaution and to mitigate associated disruptions. Heed instructions from security forces and leave the area at the first sign of a confrontation. Check for disruptions and allow extra time for travel in the affected area in the coming weeks.
