Guatemala: Indigenous rights activists to stage protest march in Guatemala City Sept. 12

Indigenous rights groups to march in Guatemala City, Guatemala, Sept. 12. Increased security, transport disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Indigenous rights groups plan to demonstrate in Guatemala City Sept. 12. The purpose of the action is to demand solutions for a number of socio-economic issues. Participants will gather at three assembly points in different parts of the city - specifically along Bulevar Vista Hermosa in the Zona 15 neighborhood, at kilometer marker 12 on Calzada Roosevelt, and at Puente de Belice - starting at 06:00. The three wings of activists will then march to Plaza de la Constitucion where a rally will take place until 14:00. It remains unclear how many participants the event may draw; however, large crowds are possible.

Authorities will almost certainly deploy increased security near assembly points and along likely march routes in order to monitor the demonstration and facilitate the flow of traffic. Transport disruptions are likely into at least the late afternoon of Sept. 12.

Advice

Avoid all announced protester assembly locations and potential march routes as a precaution. Plan alternate driving routes and allow extra time to reach destinations in affected parts of Guatemala City. Leave the area at the first sign of any security disturbance.
