Serbia: Rival pro- and anti-LGBTQ street gatherings likely in Belgrade Sept. 17 despite demonstration ban

Rival pro- and anti-LGBTQ street gatherings likely in Belgrade, Serbia, Sept. 17. Increased security, localized disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Rival groups of activists are likely to gather for opposing demonstrations in Belgrade Sept. 17 despite authorities banning the rallies, reportedly to avoid violence. The European Pride Organisers Association has announced that members and supporters of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) community will gather in defiance of the ban. Participants will gather outside of the Constitutional Court before marching at around 17:00 to Tasmajdan Park via Kralja Aleksandra Boulevard, Beogradska Boulevard, and Ilije Garasanina Street. Given the ban on demonstrations, likely attendance levels are unclear; however, several hundred activists could participate.

The conservative "Anti-globalist" activist group has indicated via social media that their supporters will gather in opposition to the LGBTQ gathering. Organizers of the counterdemonstration did not immediately clarify details regarding the gathering, but it will likely take place in proximity to the LGBTQ event.

Authorities will likely implement heightened security around the demonstrations. The Ministry of the Interior has strongly cautioned against participating in either event, warning that fines and arrests are likely. Localized transport and business disruptions are likely in rally-affected areas. Clashes may occur if officials attempt to forcibly disperse the demonstrators. Violence is also possible if opposing groups of demonstrators come into contact.

Advice

Avoid the demonstrations Sept. 17 due to possible clashes. Plan for localized traffic and business disruptions. If violence occurs nearby, immediately depart the area and seek shelter in a safe, nongovernmental building. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
