Myanmar: Additional fighting between military, armed groups likely in Mobye Township, Shan State, as of Sept. 22

Additional armed clashes between the Myanmar military (Tatmadaw) and anti-junta groups will likely occur in Mobye Township, Shan State, as of Sept. 22. Soldiers have deployed to Mobye town and stopping vehicles traveling to Mobye along the Mobye-Pekhon Road. Armed forces have also conducted raids in the town and fired artillery at targets in the area. Clashes between soldiers and militants occurred Sept. 19 as military forces entered the town; multiple soldiers and militants were killed or wounded. Tatmadaw forces had previously withdrawn from the area following fighting Sept. 8-11, during which at least 60 soldiers were killed.

Authorities will likely maintain heightened security in the affected areas in the coming days. Localized transport disruptions are probable, especially if further skirmishes occur. The military may suspend internet and telecommunications services in areas affected by fighting. Militant groups may also increase their patrols in the region.
