Switzerland: Public transport workers extend strike in Geneva through Oct. 13 /update 1

Unionized workers vote to extend bus and tram strike in Geneva, Switzerland, through Oct. 13. Protests and disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Unionized public transportation workers employed by Geneva Public Transport (TPG) have extended their strike in Geneva through Oct. 13. Urban and suburban bus and tram services have been severely impacted; intercity, regional, and international services are largely unaffected. Authorities are struggling to maintain minimum services in the city due to the presence of protesters at La Jonction, Bachet-de-Pesay, and En Chardon depots preventing buses and trams from starting their routes. The purpose of the labor actions is to demand better pay.

Heightened security and transport disruptions are likely during the work stoppage and associated demonstrations. Clashes between demonstrators and police are unlikely but cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Avoid the protest march as a routine security precaution. Reconfirm public transport schedules and allow additional time for travel in Geneva Oct. 12. Adhere to all instructions issued by local authorities.
