Informational

Event

Truck drivers affiliated with the Union of Heavy Transport Drivers (Gremial de Pilotos del Transporte Pesado) plan to hold a nationwide strike Oct. 17. The labor action aims to demand lower prices of fuel, especially diesel, and basic goods in Guatemala. The organizers have stated that they do not plan to block highways across the country; however, protests associated with the action remain possible.

The scale of the strike and the extent to which businesses and supply chains will be disrupted remains unclear. Nevertheless, some business and supply chain disruptions are possible, especially if the work stoppage becomes protracted or more unions join the action. Demonstrations remain possible, especially on main roads and outside government buildings. Clashes with police cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Plan accordingly for potential supply chain disruptions should the announced strike move forward. Consider alternate shipping arrangements for critical freights. As a standard security precaution, avoid any demonstrations that may materialize.
