Belgium: Security staff continue to block access to Brussels South Charleroi Airport Oct. 18 /update 1

Security staff blocking access to Brussels South Charleroi Airport, Belgium, Oct. 18; airport access and flight disruptions ongoing.

Warning

Event

Unionized security staff employees at Brussels South Charleroi Airport (CRL) continue to block access to the airport Oct. 18 as part of a strike and protest over a recent awarding of a security contract to two providers. Protesting employees are reportedly blocking traffic on roundabouts approaching the airport. The action began Oct. 17. It is not clear when the strike will conclude. CRL officials warn of possible disruptions through Oct. 23.

The roadblock protests are preventing road vehicles from reaching CRL. Striking security staff members will likely result in significant delays to passenger processing procedures at the airport. Flight disruptions, including delays and cancelations, are likely at CRL as a result. Lingering disruptions are likely following the end of labor action as the airport deals with a backlog of passengers and reorganizes flight schedules.

Advice

Confirm flights if scheduled to fly via CRL and check for airport access disruptions before travel. Make alternative travel arrangements if necessary. Do not check out of accommodations until onward travel is confirmed. Maintain flexible schedules and arrive at the airport early to allow additional time for passenger processing
