Authorities are responding to the discovery of a WWII-era bomb in Bischofsheim Oct. 25. The device was discovered in the Am Shindberg area during construction work. Officials have imposed a 1,000 meter (3,280 foot) security cordon to facilitate the disposal operation.

No traffic is permitted within the security cordon and all individuals must be evacuated. A section of the Bundestrasse 43 between Bischofsheim and Russelsheim is closed. Rail services operating through Mainz-Bischofsheim are also impacted resulting in delays and cancelations of services. Increased congestion is likely in the surrounding area as drivers seek alternative routes. Authorities have not provided an estimate for when the security measures will be lifted.
