The Islamic State (IS) has claimed responsibility for the armed attack against the Shahcheragh Holy Shrine in Shiraz, Iran, late Oct. 26. Authorities have stated that a lone gunman opened fire at approximately 17:45 at the Shahcheragh Holy Shrine in Shiraz, killing 15 people and wounding at least 10 others. The gunman has been detained. Authorities have concluded that there was a single assailant; earlier reports indicated that there were three perpetrators.

Iranian authorities will almost certainly increase security measures across the country, particularly around sensitive public institutions and religious establishments, over the coming days.

Context

Militant attacks in Iran's major cities like Shiraz are uncommon and mainly occur in Iran's border towns with Iraq, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.
