Bangladesh: Unionized bus drivers threaten to strike in Barisal District Nov. 4-5

Unionized bus drivers threaten to strike in Barisal District, Bangladesh, Nov. 4-5. Transport disruptions likely; protests possible.

Warning

Event

Bus drivers affiliated with the Barisal Bus Owners' Group have threatened to strike across Barisal District Nov. 4-5. The purpose of the action is to demand the government enforce its ban on the operation of illegal vehicles, including three-wheelers, on highways. The work stoppage will coincide with the planned Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) anti-government rally on Nov. 5.

Unless averted, the work stoppage could cause the suspension of local and long-distance bus services on multiple routes connecting Barisal to other cities; organizers indicate the Nathullabad Central Bus Terminal will not be operational. Commuters may seek alternative means of transport.

Although organizers have not announced specific plans for any gatherings, participating bus service employees could hold demonstrations during the labor action period. Should such protests occur, the largest will likely take place in Khulna city, especially near bus depots, government buildings, public squares, and major roadways. Authorities will likely monitor any gatherings that may materialize and could move to disperse those that become overly disruptive. Confrontations between protesters and police, as well as counterdemonstrators, cannot be ruled out.

Barisal is approximately 85 km (53 miles) east of central Khulna.

Advice

Confirm all bus service schedules in Barisal District during the work stoppage. Seek alternative transport, if needed. As a standard security precaution, avoid any protests that may materialize. Leave the area at the first sign of any security disturbance. Allow extra time for travel in the district for the duration of the strike. Heed all official transport and security advisories.
