Colombia: Motorcycle taxi workers have launched protests in Cartagena Nov. 8

Motorcycle taxi workers have launched protests in several locations of Cartagena, Colombia, Nov. 8. Disruptions likely.

Warning

Event

Motorcycle taxi workers have launched protests in several locations throughout Cartagena, Nov. 8, to oppose a recent one-month ban on motorcyclists having a male passenger. Local authorities indicate this measure is necessary to reduce crime, as many robberies are committed by men riding pillion on motorcycles.

Activists have launched protests at La Aduana Square, outside of the city hall, as well as in other parts of the city including El Amparo, El Gallo, and in El Pozon roundabout. The protests had initially been scheduled for Nov. 9, but some motorcycle taxi drivers decided to launch them one day prior; it is possible that the protests will continue Nov. 9, if the ban remains in place.

Transport disruptions are likely to continue throughout the city, with associated business disruptions. Heightened security is likely near government offices; clashes between protesters and police cannot be ruled out if the latter move to disperse protesters.

Advice

Avoid all protests as a precaution. Confirm private transportation and allow additional time to reach your destination if operating in Cartagena Nov. 8-9.
