Iran: Shooting attack kills at least five people and wounds 15 others in Izeh, Khuzestan Province, Nov. 16

Shooting attack kills at least five people and wounds 15 others in Izeh, Khuzestan Province, Iran, Nov. 16; heightened security likely.

Warning

Event

Heightened security is likely in Izeh, Khuzestan Province, over the coming hours after two gunmen reportedly opened fire in a market in the city Nov. 16, killing at least five people and wounding some 15 others. It was not immediately clear if the assault, which state media classified as a terrorist attack, was related to the ongoing protest activity in Izeh and elsewhere in the country. Anti-government protesters gathered in areas across the city late Nov. 16 and clashed with police; unconfirmed reports also assert that demonstrators set the city's seminary school ablaze.

Transport and business disruptions are likely in areas subject to protest activity and heightened security measures. Activists may organize additional demonstrations in Izeh and other locations across the country over the short term to denounce the Nov. 16 shooting attack. Further clashes between protesters and security forces cannot be ruled out.

Advice

If operating in Izeh, avoid the scene of the attack until authorities give the all-clear and prepare for protest-related disruptions to transport and business.

In general, consider deferring nonessential travel to Iran until the situation stabilizes. Avoid all large gatherings and areas where security forces have deployed. Plan for ground transport disruptions and allow extra time to reach destinations in major cities, especially near likely protest locations such as public squares and government buildings. Heed the instructions of security personnel. If violence breaks out nearby, leave the area immediately and seek shelter in a secure, nongovernmental building. Maintain contact with your diplomatic representation.
