Nepal: Security forces deploy tear gas and other crowd control measures to disperse protests in Dhangadhi Dec. 2
Security forces fire tear gas and other crowd control measures to disperse protests in Dhangadhi, Nepal, Dec. 2; increased security likely.
Event
Security forces deployed tear gas and other crowd control measures, including firing warning shots of live ammunition, to disperse protesters gathered in Dhangadhi Dec. 2. Several protesters were reportedly injured as a result. The protests began Dec. 1 following the death of a 16-year-old student caused by a road construction vehicle.
Authorities issued a prohibitory order banning protests for 24 hours from 19:00 Dec. 1. This may be extended should unrest continue. An increased security presence is likely in the impacted area. Further clashes between police forces and protesters are possible if participants ignore orders to disperse. The protest action and security personnel response will likely result in ground travel and business operation disruptions.
Advice
Avoid all protests. Plan for road travel delays. Heed instructions from security forces. If any violence erupts nearby, immediately depart the area and seek shelter in a secure nongovernment building.
