Bangladesh: Bangladesh Nationalist Party plans nationwide protests Dec. 13

Bangladesh Nationalist Party plans to protest across Bangladesh Dec. 13. Increased security, transport disruptions likely; clashes possible.

Warning

Event

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) will stage nationwide protests Dec. 13 to denounce police action during a BNP rally in Dhaka Dec. 7. Organizers are also demanding the release of detained BNP members. Specific assembly points are unclear; typical gathering sites include party offices, government buildings, public squares, and major thoroughfares. Though participation will likely vary by location, larger events will likely draw a few hundred participants, especially in urban areas such as Chattogram, Cox's Bazaar, Dhaka, and Khulna.

Authorities will almost certainly increase security near BNP-related rally sites and attempt to disperse especially disruptive gatherings. Security personnel typically resort to the use of force, especially tear gas and rubber bullets, to quickly quell incidents of civil unrest. Officials may also conduct mass arrests if activists defy orders to disperse. Clashes between police and BNP activists, as well as BNP supporters and rival political groups, cannot be ruled out. Violence may occur at larger rallies. Localized transport disruptions are likely, especially if demonstrators march on or block roadways.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations due to the increased risk of violence. If clashes break out, depart the area immediately and seek shelter at a safe, nongovernmental building. Allow additional time near sites where gatherings materialize. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
