Unionized transport workers plan nationwide strike in Eswatini Dec. 13-14. Business and transport disruptions, and violence are likely.
Event
Unionized transport workers associated with the Swaziland Transport, Communication and Allied Workers Union (SWATCAWU) plan to strike nationwide, Dec. 13-14. SWATCAWU is calling for the release of two members of Parliament. They are accused of inciting civil unrest in July 2021 and will face trial at the High Court in Mbabane, Dec. 13. The Swaziland National Association of Teachers (SNAT) has called for schools to close over fears of violence, Dec. 13-14.
Strike-related protests are likely. These could occur near the High Court in Mbabane and other government buildings nationwide. Police forces are likely to deploy to monitor any protests that materialize. Clashes with security forces are likely, especially if demonstrators ignore police orders to disperse. Public transport and business disruptions are likely for the duration of the strike.
Advice
Avoid all protests. Heed the instructions of officials. Reconfirm the status of road routes before departure. If violence occurs, depart the area immediately. Reconfirm business appointments.
