Latvia: Adverse winter weather forecast nationwide through at least Jan. 5

Event

A weather system approaching Latvia from the west is forecast to bring adverse winter weather across much of the country through at least Jan. 5. The Latvian Environment, Geology, and Meteorology Agency has issued orange snowfall warnings (the middle level on a three-tier scale) across parts of western and west-central Latvia, with the exception of southwestern coastal areas, and yellow snowfall warnings for central and east-central regions, as well as southwestern coastal areas. Precipitation may fall as sleet in coastal areas. Snowfall accumulations of 5-7 cm (2-2.8 inches) are expected across much of the country, with accumulations of 10-12 cm (3.9-4.7 inches) possible in western areas. The snowfall will be accompanied by strong winds, and visibility could be reduced to as low as 500-1,000 meters (1,640-3,281 feet) due to blowing snow. Yellow wind warnings have been issued for areas along the western coast of the Gulf of Riga. Water levels also remain high across most river basins as relatively mild temperatures in recent days have caused snow and ice to thaw. Yellow water level warnings have been issued across Latvia Jan. 4-5. Authorities will likely issue new alerts or update/rescind existing advisories as weather conditions change over the coming hours and days. Hazardous travel conditions are likely due to the reduced visibility and icy roads.

Transport
The winter weather will likely cause ground and air transport disruptions in the region over the coming days. Traffic and commercial trucking delays are possible along regional highways. Difficult and potentially dangerous driving conditions are also likely on secondary and rural roadways in the affected states as maintenance crews prioritize clearing major routes. Authorities could close stretches of highway if driving conditions become too hazardous. Gusty winds may threaten to topple high-profile vehicles throughout the affected area. Flight delays and cancellations are likely due to ground stops and deicing operations at regional airports.

Monitor local media for updated weather information. Verify road conditions before driving in areas where heavy snowfall is forecast. Allow extra time to reach destinations in these areas and carry an emergency kit and warm clothes if driving is necessary, especially on secondary or rural routes that could become impassable.
