Warning

Event

Authorities at the National Institute of Civil Defense (Instituto Nacional de Defensa Civil, INDECI) confirmed on Jan. 11 that 98 ports have closed throughout Peru's coast due to high-intensity waves. The closures could continue for the coming days, as forecasts indicate similar weather conditions through at least Jan. 16. Authorities have also recommended suspending fishing in the impacted areas and canceling any recreational activities.

Among the affected ports are Pizarro, Zorritos, and Paita in the north, Pacasmayo, Malabrigo, and Chancay in central Peru, and San Nicolas and San Juan in the south.

The port closures will almost certainly affect numerous business and commercial shipping activities. Lingering disruptions are likely even after the ports reopen as operators work to clear the backlogs.

Advice

Avoid the impacted areas. Prepare for possible supply chain disruptions and consider alternate shipping arrangements for critical freights.
