Police fired water canons to disperse protesters in the vicinity of Arasady Junction in Jaffna, Northern Province, Jan. 15. According to reports, protesters had gathered near Jaffna University and were planning to march to Nallur Kovil to oppose a planned visit by President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who was scheduled to attend the Thai Pongal ceremony being held there. There are no confirmed reports of casualties as a result of the clashes. An increased security personnel presence remains in the vicinity of Arasady Junction.
