A protest is ongoing in Goma, Jan. 18 despite a ban on protests. Civil society activists are denouncing the presence of South Sudanese and East African Community (EAC) forces in the country. Participants have gathered at the Mutinga roundabout and are expected to march through the Governorate.

A heightened security presence is likely in Goma, Jan. 18. Clashes are possible if protesters ignore police orders to disperse. Localized ground travel disruptions are likely near protest locations. Demonstrators could also gather at border crossing points with Rwanda, potentially leading to disruptions.

Context

Since November 2021, the M23 rebel group has increased attacks targeting armed forces in the eastern DRC, while tensions have increased between Rwanda and the DRC. Several protests have been held in recent months in eastern DRC and Kinshasa to denounce the security situation and the presence of foreign troops; some of these protests have resulted in fatal violence.
