Colombia: Unionized taxi drivers hold a citywide strike in Cucuta, Jan. 26, over several demands

Unionized taxi drivers, affiliated with the Norte de Santander Taxi Union (Sindicato de Taxistas del Norte de Santander), have launched a citywide strike in Cucuta early Jan. 26. The action is over a series of demands to local and regional authorities. Drivers are demanding action to combat illegal and app-based private transportation services and additional controls for taxi drivers with foreign license plates. They also want better coordination with the police.

The activists also plan to build roadblocks in numerous locations throughout Cucuta and nearby areas, including the Atanasio Girardot bridge, Camilo Daza International Airport (CUC), Transport Terminal, San Mateo bridge, and Ventura Plaza mall.

Significant transport disruptions are likely throughout the city and nearby areas until at least late Jan. 26. Activists may continue their protest actions Jan. 27. Business disruptions are also likely. Heightened security and clashes are possible, especially in protests located along international bridges and the airport.
