Sri Lanka: Ongoing protests denouncing government's recent income tax plans likely to continue in Colombo through at least early Feburary /update 1
Ongoing rallies denouncing government's recent income tax plans likely to continue in Colombo, Sri Lanka, through at least early Feburary.
Event
Activists affiliated with various trade unions and civil organizations opposed to the government's recent plan to increase income tax will likely continue their protests in Colombo through at least early February. On Jan. 30, several trade unions representing Colombo Port workers held a demonstration near the port entrance; union leaders have threatened to launch a strike and block vessels from entering Colombo Fort if the government does not revise the new policy. Unless averted, the work stoppage will impact shipping services and may cause commercial disruptions.
Although no group immediately announced specific plans for any related demonstrations, activists may stage additional work stoppages and rallies at popular venues, such as Galle Face Green and Fort Railway Station, as well as prominent government buildings, public squares, and along major roadways. Attendance will vary by location or organizer; most rallies involve a few dozen people. Gatherings by political parties, trade unions, and student organizations typically draw the largest numbers of participants.
Heightened security and localized disruptions to transport and business are likely, especially during larger gatherings, labor actions, and marches. Clashes are possible if demonstrators come in close proximity to police and/or rival activists. Security forces have previously used tear gas and water cannons to disperse demonstrations. Rallies may turn violent quickly, especially if activists commit acts of arson or vandalism.
Advice
Avoid all demonstrations due to possible clashes. Plan accordingly for localized transport and business disruptions near gathering sites. Do not attempt to navigate roadblocks; wait for police to clear them before proceeding. If violence breaks out, depart the area immediately and seek shelter at a safe, nongovernmental building. Monitor trusted local media for updates on protest plans as organizers may change details at short notice. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
