Netherlands: Unionized bus and train staff to strike in Drenthe, Friesland, Groningen, and Overijssel provinces, Feb. 2
Unionized bus and train staff to strike in Drenthe, Friesland, Groningen, Overijssel provinces, Netherlands, Feb. 2; disruptions likely.
Event
Bus and train staff affiliated with the VVMC labor union plan to strike Feb. 2, following failed wage negotiations. The strike is likely to impact regional rail and bus services in the four northern and eastern regions: Drenthe, Friesland, Groningen, and Overijssel. It is likely to mainly impact the Arriva and Keolis rail services. Separate nationwide rail and bus strikes are planned by other labor unions in the Netherlands, Feb. 6-10.
Delays and cancelations of bus and some train services are likely. The action could result in increased traffic congestion and greater demand for alternative modes of transport. Related demonstrations are possible in town and city centers or near transport nodes. Any pickets that do occur are likely to be peaceful and largely undisruptive.
Advice
Confirm public transport schedules and local traffic conditions before travel and allow extra time to complete journeys Feb. 2. Make alternative travel arrangements if necessary.
