Tehrik-e-Insaf party likely to continue ongoing protests across Pakistan through at least early March. Increased security likely.

Warning

Event

The Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) party will likely continue its ongoing nationwide protests through at least early March to demand several concessions and denounce the current administration's rule. On Feb. 22, the party will launch the Jail Bharo Tehrik (Jail Fill Movement) in Lahore and plans to expand the campaign nationwide. As a part of the action, PTI supporters will deliberately attempt to be arrested en masse to raise awareness of their grievances; gatherings are likely near Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) offices, police stations, as well as near prominent government buildings, press clubs, public squares, and major thoroughfares. Other political rallies are also possible at short notice over the coming days, especially if authorities threaten to detain PTI leader and former Prime Minister Imran Khan. Gathering sizes will differ by location; previous rallies have drawn thousands of participants, especially in major urban centers such as Islamabad, and in Punjab and Sindh provinces.

Authorities will almost certainly increase security near any PTI rally sites and may attempt to forcibly disperse gatherings that become especially disruptive. Clashes may occur at larger rallies. Protesters may march along or block major roadways, prompting localized transport disruptions. Localized business disruptions are possible near larger demonstrations.

Advice

Avoid all demonstrations due to the increased potential for violence. If clashes break out, depart the area immediately and seek shelter at a secure, nongovernmental building. Allow additional time to travel to sites near related gatherings. Plan accordingly for localized business disruptions. Heed all official security and transport advisories.
