Guatemala: Protesting activists blocking several thoroughfares nationwide Feb. 21
Protesting activists blocking several main roadways in various parts of Guatemala on Feb. 21.
Event
Activists affiliated with the Peasant Development Committee (Comite de Desarrollo Campesino, CODECA) are protesting in several locations across Guatemala on Feb. 21. The purpose of the action is to demand that the presidential and vice-presidential candidates from the Peoples' Liberation Movement (Movimiento para la Liberacion de los Pueblos, MLP) party be allowed to participate in the 2023 general elections. As of early Feb. 21, protester roadblocks have been reported at locations along the CA-1, CA-2, CA-9, and CA-14 highways. Additional roadblocks are likely along other thoroughfares elsewhere in the country.
Heightened security and transport disruptions are likely in affected areas over the coming hours. Clashes between protesters and police cannot be ruled out.
Advice
Avoid all protests. Allow additional time for travel and consider alternative driving routes to avoid areas where demonstrators have gathered. Do not attempt to cross protester roadblocks; wait for the police to clear them before proceeding.
