DRC: Opposition party calls for protest in Kinshasa March 4
The Alliance pour le Changement opposition party calls for a protest march in Kinshasa, DRC, March 4. Avoid all protests.
Event
The Alliance pour le Changement (APC) opposition party has called for a protest march in Kinshasa March 4. Protesters will gather in front of the APC headquarters, located on Street 11, and march to the National Assembly via Lumumba, Sendwe, and Triomphal boulevards. The start time is unclear. The action is to demand the release of the party's leader and former close ally of President Felix Tshisekedi, Jean-Marc Kabund-A-Kabund.
The protest will coincide with the visit of French President Emmanuel Macron in Kinshasa. Authorities may issue a ban on the demonstration.
Should the march takes place, a heightened security presence and localized disruptions are likely in the vicinity of the march route. Clahses between security forces and protesters are possible should protesters ignore police orders to disperse, especially if the event has not been sanctioned.
Context
Kabund was imprisoned in January 2022 for "treason, undermining the external security of the State and spreading false news". In July 2022, Kabund has announced his candidacy for the 2023 presidential elections.
Advice
Avoid all protests. Consult local security partners on the viability of traveling in affected areas. Maintain contact with diplomatic missions. Adhere to directives issued by local authorities. If clashes occur, depart the area immediately.
